Synopsis by Connor McMadden

Yugodivas is a Swiss documentary about Yugoslavian refugees living in New York City and how war in their homeland changed their lives. At least that is what the producers of this misfire will have you believe. The subjects, the Yugodivas, are Mirjana Jokovic, an actress; Vesna Gelubovic, a painter and graphic artist; and three musicians from the rock-folk fusion band D'Divaz. Most of the footage amounts to five women walking the streets of Manhattan, discussing Milosevic's atrocities and how they received the first news of American bombing raids in 1999. In between are glimpses of the women starting new artistic projects, and while they claim that the conflict has influenced their work, little evidence is presented onscreen. A half-hour into this documentary, one wonders why these five women were selected for this piece, since none were actually on the ground in Yugoslavia when the bullets were flying.
