Synopsis by Janiss Garza

This is yet another excellent video from yoga master Alan Finger, who runs several studios in New York. Just a touch more difficult than Introduction to Yoga, this tape, as the title suggests, focuses on poses that increase muscle strength and flexibility. Some basic poses are the same as in Introduction to Yoga -- potted palm, cat pose, downward dog and mountain pose, for example -- Finger introduces some variations. The lunge here is practiced with the torso upright, and in addition to sun salutations, there is also the more complex sun worship. Other poses include scale, triangle and the squt. Finger safely guides the student through each move with clear-cut instruction and his gentle humor makes them all very non-intimidating -- even that dreaded cross-legged hip-opener that some instructors call "the pose of nobility." As always, Finger's non-mystical approach makes this tape accessible to everyone, although those who want the Indian names for the poses and any new age philosophizing may be disappointed. On the other hand, yoga enthusiasts who want a tape that they will be able to use for many months (preferably to supplement their in-person instruction) will love this video. Two of Finger's senior teachers show each pose -- one displays the less flexible version while the other gives the more advanced move. Props are minimal -- only a belt is used for one pose -- and there is an especially relaxing guided meditation for the corpse pose. A highly recommended video.
