Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

A little boy (Kiril Variyski) is lying rather bored in a hospital bed, nursing his broken arm. One of his three roommates is a kind man with a broken back who decides to entertain the boy and himself as well with stories of the "Black Pirate" as he struggles to defend his father and brother (the "Red Pirate") against the evils of a wicked, 17th c. colonial governor living in the Caribbean. As the fantastic story unfolds day after day, the little boy sees a rather nasty hypochondriac in the next bed in the guise of the evil Caribbean despot, and equates the other characters in the story with the real-life people around him as well. Soon the interactions of the patients in the room mix with the continuing story, even in the climactic ending when the Black Pirate has to fight a final battle with the bad governor. As the governor's fortress is attacked and victory is imminent, it becomes clear that some sacrifice is necessary to win the day. Even in its final moments, the story is echoed by the reality of the patients in the hospital room.
