Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

This series from the History Channel explores some of the most dangerous and deadly natural disasters of all time, including this episode on the typhoons that overtook three U.S. Navy destroyers. In 1944, close to the end of World War II, Admiral "Bull" Halsey was commanding a fleet of destroyers who suddenly found themselves up against a threat of Mother Nature, rather than a military threat. Typhoons with 100-foot waves hit the destroyers and caused three to capsize and sink, including the U.S.S. Hull. Thanks to the efforts of the U.S.S. Tabberer, some of the men that were thrown into the sea were rescued and lived to tell their incredible story of bravery, fear, and devastation. Even though 790 soldiers lost their lives in those typhoons, Halsey was determined to press on. Soon, another one of his fleets was caught in another lesser typhoon, which again caught him and his men by surprise. Halsey was later reprimanded for not being better prepared for these acts of nature.
