Synopsis by Rob Ferrier
War in the Pacific revolved around the application of air power. The carrier quickly replaced the battleship as the arm of naval decision. Islands were fought over because of their suitability for airfields. The opening shot of war was fired by a carrier-based plane at Pearl Harbor, and it was American bombers that finally forced Japanese acquiescence with the fire bombings of Japanese cities and the eventual dropping of the atomic bomb. This video offers a broad overview of the air war over the waters of the Pacific, relying heavily on contemporary footage.
