Synopsis by Mark Deming

The 2008 Olympic Games brought the attention of the world to China, and the nation carefully stage-managed its appearance for the sake of the world's news media. But one side of life in China that was largely ignored was the role of women in their society, as women have come to play a significant role in the drive for political and social change in the largest nation in the world. Filmmaker Wen-hai Huang offers a behind-the-scenes look at the struggle by Chinese women for greater personal freedom and human rights in Wo Men, a documentary which gives voice to the book smugglers, bloggers, spiritual activists and other rebels striving to change a nation in flux through peaceful means. Wo Men was an official selection at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.
