Rising Western star Jack Hoxie's penultimate effort for Poverty Row company Sunset, Wolf's Tracks was a typically threadbare little silent Western about two young strangers -- Jack Hastings (Jack Hoxie) and Jean Meredith (Andree Tourneur) -- inheriting one-half of a map to a hidden gold mine. A villain, Wolf Santell (Albert J. Smith), steals Jack's half of the map, which is enclosed in a locket, only to lose it again in the river. In one of those coincidences found only in a cheap melodrama, the locket is found by Jack, who is soon pursued by the villain, his mistress (Marin Sais, Hoxie's wife in real life), and a local gambler (William Lester), all wanting their share of the treasure. About to be knifed by the gambler, Jack is saved by Jean's supposedly dead grandfather (James Welch). His contract with Sunset producer Anthony J. Xydias coming to an end, Hoxie quickly signed with Universal, becoming that studio's number two Western star after the inimitable Hoot Gibson.
