Synopsis by Rovi

ABC Afterschool Special departs from its usual "dramatization" format with this documentary episode, covering the 1972 U.S. Senate Race in South Dakota. The political battle between incumbent George McGovern (Democrat) and Leo Thorness (Republican) is detailed from the viewpoint of two teenaged girls, both campaign volunteers: Robin Allen is on the McGovern team, while Lori Forman has signed up with the Thorness camp. The thrills and rigors of campaigning -- motorcades, TV appearances, grass-roots stumping, neighborhood-canvassing, photo ops -- are seen exclusively through the girls' eyes, right up to the night of the election (which of course, will prove immensely disappointing to at least one of our "heroines").
