Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The reality show format spilled over into tradition-bound PBS in this four-part series, co-produced by New York City's educational outlet WNET. In each episode, modern-day military men, police officers, and athletes volunteered to live and do battle in the same manner as their historical forebears. The archaic weapons utilized included javelins, pilums, scramsaexes, halberds, and tridents, and the combatants were trained in the classic manner while garbed in ill-fitting armor and other protective clothing. The series was subdivided into a quartet of theme episodes: "Romans," "Knights," "Vikings," and "Gladiators." Warrior Challenge premiered May 6, 2003.
