Originally intended as a feature-length documentary, Voice of India was whittled down to a 3-reel featurette for its general release. The film was the brainchild of globetrotting cameraman Paul L. Hoeffler, whose first "expedition" film Africa Speaks proved to be an unexpected box-office hit back in 1930. India's internal political travails and caste-system controversies are not dwelt upon; the film prefers to concentrate on the cultural accomplishments and natural wonders of the "Jewel of the Crown." Several sequences have obviously been staged for the benefit of the camera, notably the rescue of an Indian child from a slithering cobra. Voice of India was directed by Wallace Worsley, best known for his handling of the 1923 Lon Chaney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
