Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Valeska Suratt, one of the Fox Studio's lesser vamps (Theda Bara was the most prominent), drops her wicked ways to play the title character in this melodrama. Ruth Merrill (Suratt) is the daughter of a crook. When he and his gang are apprehended for a bank robbery, Ruth gets mixed up with the affair. Although she is innocent, she spends six years in jail. When she gets out she becomes the maid at the home of Dr. Boulden (Herbert Heyes) and his sister (Claire Whitney). The doctor falls in love with Ruth and they marry. Ruth's happiness, however, is shattered by the appearance of a detective (John Charles) who shows up to blackmail her. On the night he comes to exact money from her, Ruth's father -- now an escaped convict -- appears and he kills the detective. The father then disappears and Ruth is accused of the crime. The police put her through the torturous "third degree." But finally, the father turns up, dying from burns he received in a fire, and confesses just before breathing his last. Thus Ruth can go back to her good life with the doctor. The picture was marred by miscasting -- Suratt was even less equipped than Theda Bara to play the role of a innocent girl.
