Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

It is a little known fact that certain of the most heinous of the legal measures enacted under the Nazi regime in Germany were never repealed after the war, but were retained under the 1949 constitution. Among these is the notorious Article 175, which made homosexuality illegal (not just homosexual acts). This documentary features interviews with gays and lesbians who somehow survived the gay holocaust of the 1940s, during which homosexuals were rounded up and executed by the Nazis. Also interviewed, however, are post-war homosexuals who, despite the fact that their very existence is illegal, have experienced very few difficulties either socially or legally. However, all is not benign for gays in modern-day Germany: since almost all the words for homosexuals in German are strongly derogatory, within the homosexual community milder euphemisms abound, such as the word used in the film's title: Verzaubert, or "enchanted."
