After having been an important official during the nationalization of industries at the beginning of communist rule in Hungary, the elderly man in this story receives increasingly less and less involving and responsible positions. Now he is retired, and the emptiness and shabbiness of his life is driven home to him as he tries to discover some purpose to sustain him in his old age.
