Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

This documentary closely follows a team of Norwegian scientists as they brave the cold and dryness of Antarctica to carry out numerous experiments and observations. This 1989-90 journey is only the fourth Antarctic expedition by the Norwegians (unlike the permanent expeditions by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.), and was a momentous event for that nation. Among the more curious phenomena is a huge flock of birds that nest long distances from their nearest food and frequently starve to death. Due to the climate in Antarctica, the mummified but otherwise unscathed corpses of the starved birds litter the area populated by the live ones.
