Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This program is part of a series that examines some of the most unusual events and people that were part of the World War II experience. The stories are told using archival film footage, photographs, personal accounts, and scholarly commentary. This episode profiles the life of Hitler's third in command, Rudoph Hess. The enigmatic man was devoted to his Fuhrer, yet he flew a plane to Scotland on his own to try to negotiate peace with Britain in 1941. He was taken prisoner for the duration of the war, Hitler disowned him, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the trials at Nuremberg after the war. He is said to have committed suicide at the age of 92, although conspiracy theorists argue that the prisoner they found was not Hess at all.
