Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Mary Hamilton (Elsie Ferguson) is rich, but she doesn't want to be limited to those of her class in her search for a marriage partner. This is not an unusual storyline for a light comedy, especially during the silent era, but Under the Greenwood Tree takes a very bizarre turn -- Mary buys a wagon and lives by herself near a gypsy camp in order to achieve her goal! Since she's pretty (and has all that dough), a few of her broke-but-titled beaus follow after her. They're chased away, however, by the chores she gives them. One day, while swimming in the lake of a big estate, she's seen by Jack Hutton (Eugene O'Brien). He immediately falls in love with her. But the gypsies try to rob Mary, and when Jack comes to her aid, they attack and injure him. After that, Mary decides to marry Jack and return to her normal way of life. This strange story wasn't original to this film; it began life as a stage play (written by H.V. Esmond) that had long runs in both New York and London.
