Long before she began billing herself as Mrs. Wallace Reid, Dorothy Davenport enjoyed considerable success as a leading lady in her own right. In The Unattainable, Davenport was cast as Bessie Gale, the toast of the Broadway stage. Turning down the proposals and propositions of every wealthy Stage Johnny in New York, Bessie earns the reputation of being "unattainable" (from the motion picture of the same name). While touring in California, Bessie is inadvertently separated from her fellow actors. Her absence is mistaken as temperament, and she is fired from her show. Philosophically, she begins life all over again as the wife of local sheep rancher Robert Goodman (Emory Johnson). But her connubial bliss comes to a screeching halt when one of her old suitors (Richard Morris) shows up with the intention of claiming Bessie for himself, whether she likes it or not. The outcome of the story was later redressed as the finale for the Damon Runyon yarn Little Miss Marker.
