Synopsis by Nathan Southern

The innovative German-born hard rocker Uli Jon Roth began his career as lead guitarist and frontman for the Scorpions in the '70s, before branching off into a psychedelic/neo-classical solo career of his own. He worked on the massive, 27-track Electric Sun EP from 1978-1984; it saw release in 1985. The home video release Uli Jon Roth: Historic Performances, Vol. 1 compiles never-before-seen promotional videos from the Electric Sun compositional period, vis-à-vis live performance footage of Roth from this era. It features five tracks from Amsterdam appearances shot between 1979-1980, including "Lilac," "Electric Sun," "Sundown," "Earthquake (Part II)" and "Japanese Dream." The 1982 Mulhouse sequence features the tracks "Fire Wind," "Virgin Killer," improvisations of "Free Jam Encore," and "Mutron Jam." The Red House Blues/Electric Sun Era 2 sequence of the release -- filmed in Sweden and Great Britain circa 1983 -- has Roth performing "Icebreaker," "What is Love," "Why," "Enola Gay/Hiroshima Today," "Angel of Peace," "Return," and nine more.
