The British game show Trick or Treat was obviously patterned after the American audience-participation series Let's Make a Deal, a fact acknowledged by the producers in the closing credits. On each episode, contestants dressed in silly costumes played silly games and answered silly questions in hopes of winning not-so-silly cash and merchandise prizes. Cohosts Mike Smith and Julian Clary (the latter some distance removed from his '90s status as British TV's favorite gay comedian) saw to it that everybody had a good time, even the losers. Critics hated Trick or Treat when it debuted over ITV in 1988; the folks at home loved it.
