Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

Two Hispanics living in New York City are suddenly trapped in an underground apartment when an unidentified disaster happens that collapses the building above them. Given their ethnic backgrounds, the dialogue is kept in Spanish, with English subtitles. Alba (Sonia Vivas), the woman who rents the apartment, is a mystic who believes that life continues on a molecular level after death, rendering death non-existent. Just before the disaster, she is visited by Carlos (Julio Torresoto) an overweight plumber, and he is trapped with her. As their dialogue about life and death continues, he is busy trying to dig a tunnel to the outside, and killing rats to supplement their diet. His pragmatism and her mysticism clash, yet they eventually become attracted to each other (Carlos sheds his extra pounds throughout the story), and Alba gives birth to a baby -- a baby that is dead, and without sexual organs. Because of the baby's deformity, the couple realize that the disaster that buried them must have been nuclear -- the world must be at war, if it still exists. Issues about the broader meaning of existence come to the fore as the couple contemplate their own slim chances of survival.
