Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
This standard documentary by Basil Maros takes a look at the modern history of Greece between the beginning of World War I and the end of World War II. During that time the country saw many different governments, starting with King Constantine and ending with the last remnants of German occupying forces trashing the place before they left. Using old newsreel footage, confiscated German films, and other archival sources Maros has focused primarily on the leaders that paraded in and out of the scene during this thirty-year period. The Greek population as a whole is shown en masse -- in demonstrations or rallies or running from invading armies -footage that can be telling in itself, as when a group of unknowing children show solidarity with a military regime.
