Synopsis by Mark Deming

A superb singer and songwriter whose songs of the Old West and love in the present day have won him a loyal following, Tom Russell has in recent years celebrated an annual tradition by staging a series of concerts during a voyage across Canada by rail, performing with guitarist Andrew Hardin as they roll across the continent. Tom Russell: Hearts on the Line is a documentary which follows Russell and his friends as they play their way across Canada and enjoy the sights. The film also includes interviews with friends and sometimes collaborators Dave Alvin and Eliza Gilkyson, while the Hot Club of Cowtown, Fats Kaplin, and Kristi Rose join Russell for some songs. Selections include "The Road It Gives, the Road It Takes Away," "Navajo Rug," "The Angel of Lyon," "All the Fine Young Ladies," "Where the Dream Begins," and more.
