Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Its title lifted from an old folk song, Thoughts are Free charts the postwar life of a soldier (Herbert Ludwig) wounded in battle. Upon discovering that he and his fellow convalescents are being transported to a Soviet Labor camp, Ludwig escapes to his home in the Eastern portion of Berlin. He spends the next fifteen years raising his family under the restrictions of the Communist regime. By the time he has resolved to escape, it is 1961, and the Berlin Wall has been erected. Ludwig makes it to the West, but his wife and daughter remain in the East. Thoughts are Free served as the directorial debut for veteran character actor Josef Sommer.
