Synopsis by Mark Deming

Siblings try to make sense of their difficult family relationships while pondering what they want from life in this drama from Portugal. Ines (Joana Barata) and Rafael (Pedro Sousa) were raised in a coastal community where their father was a surfer and ran a shop near the beach. Father abandoned the family when Ines and Rafael were children, forcing their mother (Sofia Grillo) to raise them on their own. Teenaged Ines learns that twenty-something Rafael is living with their mother, which comes as a surprise to her, since she'd been told he was spending time in Australia with his surfing buddies. As it happens, Rafael was actually studying to be a monk, but he's left the monastery after experiencing a crisis of faith, and spends his days riding the waves in his hometown as he waits for a sign from God. Ines is not interested in spiritual matters, but is deeply curious about why Rafael and her mother would like to her, and as she also bides her time riding the waves, she tries to come to terms with the distance between herself and her immediate family, as well as wondering what the future has in store for them all. Deste Lado Da Ressurreicao (aka This Side Of Resurrection) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
