Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
The This Old House crew has a lot of work to do on the Bentley house restoration, but finds time for visits to Nantucket's Whaling Museum, the 1827 African Meeting House, and the Nantucket Life-Saving Museum. They also visit with the Wharf Rat Club, a group of old timers who get together every morning in a former quahog-sorting shack on the Old North Wharf. Meanwhile, back at the house, a new chimney is going up, complete with the traditional Nantucket rounded firebox. Insulation of spun-bonded fabric goes in, new windows arrive, and the old Victorian doors are reinstalled. The viewer gets a lesson in sidewall shingling with Eastern white cedar, the preferred siding on Nantucket. The specter of Lyme's Disease, prevalent on the island, is discussed and there is a side trip to Switzerland to look at high-quality factory-built housing.
