Synopsis by Alice Day

The illiteracy rate among girls in Africa remain high, and little hope exists that the grim facts will change appreciably in the near future. In a male-dominated society, their education seems to rank very low on the priority lists of government officials. These Girls are Missing: The Gender Gap in Africa's Schools is a stimulating discussion of the potential benefits for the continent if this large population were given equal opportunities into school admission. The program profiles several girls, including a few who are receiving quality training, and looks at the barriers that African culture may raise that impedes the progress of its women.
