Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man makes a career out of collecting the sadness of others in this surreal drama from Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. Rahmat (Hasan Pourshirazi) spends his days sailing on Lake Urmia, a body of saltwater whose shores are full of communities cursed with more than their share of sorrow. Rahmat seeks out people whose lives have been tragic and asks them to share their tales of woe, and as they weep he captures their tears in small bottles. After hearing the tale of a woman whose sensuality made her too full of life to live, Rahmat prepares to give her body a burial at sea, but he finds he's been tricked into rescuing Nassim (Younes Ghazali), a younger man who becomes his assistant. As the two men travel from one town to the next, they are witness to tragic tales of life, as a dwarf must deliver the bad luck of the village to an underwater spirit, a teenager is married to the ocean when he refuses an arranged marriage, and an artist is punished for imaging a world of different colors.
