Synopsis by Alice Day

The puzzle of how huge ships are able to float is the topic of discussion in The Way Things Work: How Ships Float, as host Bob Symes sets out to explain the answer. Using a brick, a piece of wood, and a tank of water, he demonstrates that the relation of an object to the amount of water displaced is what determines its ability to float. This principle was first discovered by Greek mathematician Archimedes. This series of programs, many under ten minutes in length, covers topics of science and features experiments that can be done in the classroom using ordinary objects.
