Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Director Edgar Lewis adapted the screenplay of The Thief from a stage play by Henri Bernstein. Dorothy Donnelly plays a wife whose extravagance far exceeds her allowance. In desperation, she steals money from her best friend. After this emotional high point, the film bogs down in its own dramaturgy as Donnelly tries to make amends to her friend, her unforgiving husband Richard Buhler, and her own consciences. To illustrate the heroine's inner turmoil, director Lewis utilized a "half-dissolve" technique, symbolically juxtaposing separate but inter-related images.
