Synopsis by Mark Deming

Peter Czerwinski is a star in the wild world of competitive eating; he can plow through a 72 ounce steak in just over seven minutes, swallow 17 bananas in 45 seconds and eat 27 extra-large slices of New York-style pizza in 12 minutes. Czerwinski's exploits with a knife and fork have made him a favorite on YouTube and he's one of North America's top-ranked competitive eaters, as well as a devoted body builder and a promising engineering student. Czerwinski's story would be impressive under most circumstances, but his back story reveals how remarkable his accomplishments truly are; in 2002, five years before he began eating as a sport, Czerwinski was hospitalized with Anorexia when it looked as if the eating disorder might claim his life. So how does a man reclaim his image of himself and his body so radically in half a decade? Filmmaker George Tsioutsioulas offers an in-depth profile of Peter Czerwinski and his strange, inarguably remarkable life journey in the documentary The Story Of Furious Pete. The movie was an official selection at the 2010 Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival.
