Synopsis by Cara Saposnik

The pride and hard work that go into stone carving are brought to life in this Academy Award-winning documentary. The Stone Carvers allows the voices of a small group of artisans to be heard as they relate memories and share recollections. A tight-knit group of Italian-Americans has been working for years on the Washington Cathedral. Though this gothic monument was begun in 1907, it is still under construction. The dedication and spirit of these men is evident in the way the inanimate stone is brought to life. Stone carving is delicate and satisfying work, and these artists point with pride to the product of their efforts. The Stone Carvers is an educational and humorous look at a unique art.
