Oliver Hardy, who often played a "heavy" (both literally and figuratively) in comedies -- at least, until he teamed up with Stan Laurel in the late '20s -- does a rare turn as a simple-minded wimp in this Lubin split-reeler. In spite of the fact that he's clearly unsuited for the job, Fred (Hardy) works at a ranch, he and takes his fellow cowpunchers to see a musical Western play called Dead Shot Nell. Fred immediately falls for the soubrette playing Nell (Mabel Paige), and when she sings, "Come and Kiss Me," that's exactly what he does. He is tossed out of the theater, but, undaunted, comes around to see her the next day. When Fred discovers that the troupe is broke, he invests money in them. In return, he is offered the play's starring role, but as soon as his money runs out, he is fired. Dejected, Fred lays his head down on the nearby railroad tracks. He decides against suicide, however, and stands up just as a train comes by.
