Synopsis by Mark Deming
While passing through the Springfield Airport with his family, Homer Simpson (voice of Dan Castellaneta) is approached by members of a religious cult known as The Movementarians, who invite him to a free orientation session. Despite warnings from his daughter Lisa (voice of Yeardley Smith) that he's "the highly suggestible type," Homer attends the meeting and immediately signs himself and the rest of his family up as new members of the cult. The Movementarians follow a mysterious man they call "the Leader," who claims to be building a special spacecraft in which he will carry his followers to a planet called Blisstonia, where all will know contentment. While Marge (voice of Julie Kavner) and Lisa are not taken in by the Movementarians' claims, both Homer and Bart fall for their lies, though the hard work that comes as part of living on their collective farm doesn't agree with them. Determined to save her family, Marge escapes the Movementarian compound and recruits a deprogrammer to bring Homer back to his senses, though it turns out that Marge has a secret weapon in luring back the man she married. "The Joy Of Sect" was first aired on February 8, 1998.
