Synopsis by Alice Duncan

The world has a special interest in the Royal Family of England -- with a romantic attraction to the formality and grandeur involved in the roles of royalty, and a curiosity about the parts these figures play in British culture and politics. This ABC News documentary provides a look at the history of the Windsors -- the family of the current Queen, Elizabeth II -- examining events in the lives of well-known figures (including Edward VIII's decision to abdicate the throne to marry the divorced Wallis Simpson) and discussing the much-publicized and sometimes tragic lives of current family members (including Prince Charles, the late Princess Diana, and their sons -- who are in line for the throne). Significant ways in which the lives of royalty have changed within the past six decades are explored, and many glimpses of the ceremony and pageantry involved in the public role of royalty are provided.
