Synopsis by Mark Deming
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov Lenin was a political theoretician and revolutionary who helped the Bolsheviks rise to power, and after the Russian Revolution helped to create a new socialist state alongside Leon Trotsky which became known as the Soviet Union. However, despite his power and influence, and the later victory of his cause in the Soviet Civil War, Lenin was a spent force in Soviet politics by 1922, and a series of strokes left him literally without a voice by 1923. The Red Masters, Vol. 1: The Secret Lenin examines both the public and private lives of this figure whose philosophies played an integral part in the Cold War of the 50's and 60's.
