Synopsis by Sandra Brennan

Following perestroika, there was renewed interest in restoring descendants of Russia's illustrious Romanovs to the throne. Chief among the supporters is the playwright and historian Edvard Radzinksy. As is the case for many historical figures in Russia's long history, legends surrounding the death of Tsar Nicholas II, Royal clan during the Bolshevik uprising in July 1918. Some believe that some or all of the White Russians survived execution, others, including Radzinsky believe the Romanovs were executed and seek to find their burial place. Others make wild claims about being direct descendants and therefore rightful inheritors of the now-vacant throne. This documentary examines a few of those controversies while offering dramatic and rather lurid recreations of the events surrounding the mystery.
