Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Amsterdam is where Howard and Selene live, but they are foreign residents there, English speakers. They have met and become lovers in this city of canals, and no matter what the outcome of their affair, one thing is certain; it will not suffer from lack of analysis and discussion. The two have frequent and unruly sex, invariably followed (or preceded) by interminable and very frank discussions about sex. The filmmaker has managed to portray these painfully earnest people with considerable humor, which is perhaps why reviewers didn't universally give this difficult piece (which barely escapes being pornography, albeit of an intelligent kind) failing marks.
