Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Seeking out a fresh angle for a TV human interest story, the WJM staff begins hanging around a singles bar, soaking up the atmosphere and interviewing the customers. Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) and Lou (Ed Asner) think they have a fantastic show on their hands when several of the "singles" agree to appear on-camera. But on the night of the big broadcast, the viewers of Minneapolis are treated to a nervously improvised two-person show -- and guess who those two persons are? A pre-Laverne and Shirley Penny Marshall has a key supporting role in "I Was a Single for WJM," which aired on March 2, 1974, as the final episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show's fourth season.
