Synopsis by Hal Erickson
An old war wound lands Lou Grant (Edward Asner) in the hospital for minor surgery. In Lou's absence, Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) takes charge of the newsroom, resulting in a tiff between herself and news writer Murray (Gavin MacLeod). But the most curious development in this episode involves anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight), who, by a series of bizarre happenstances, ends up as Lou's best pal on earth. The closing credit sequence is a gem. "Operation: Lou" was first broadcast on December 9, 1972.
