Synopsis by Mark Deming
In 1976, avant-garde composer and New York Philharmonic conductor Pierre Boulez teamed up with celebrated theatrical director Patrice Chéreau for a very special project -- staging a unique Centennial production of Richard Wagner's epic operatic cycle Der Ring Des Nibelungen in association with the composer's grandson, Wolfgang Wagner. The four operas of the Ring are a monumental undertaking under any circumstances, and this documentary offers an inside look at the long and complicated process of bringing the visions of Boulez, Chéreau, and Wagner together on-stage.
