This drama was based on the novel by Holman Day. 1910s matinee idol Harold Lockwood plays Walker Farr, a wealthy young man who is relaxing in Palm Beach with his friends. He makes a bet that a man can fully enjoy life, no matter his station, and sets out to prove it. Dressed as a tramp, he travels to the little town of Marlon and meets Kate Kilgour (Pauline Curley). Even though she is engaged to Richard Dodd (William Clifford), the son of water company boss Simon Dodd (Stanton Heck), he begins to fall in love with her. But his energies are soon directed toward taking care of Rose-Marie (Gertrude Maloney), a little girl who was orphaned when her mother committed suicide. The town's water, however, is tainted and the girl becomes a victim of a typhoid epidemic. When she dies, Farr is determined to correct the water situation and uncovers a story of graft and corruption with Simon Dodd at the center. Farr makes sure the guilty parties are ousted from power and, believing that Kate is still going to marry Richard Dodd, prepares to leave. Kate, however, has other ideas and she convinces Farr that she loves him.
