Adapted from a novel by Michael Bonadies, this ABC Afterschool Special stars Melissa Sherman as Maggie MacDonald, a talented teenage figure skater. Training day and night for years, Maggie aspires to "go for the gold" at the Olympics. But when she is sidelined by an arthritic knee, Maggie is compelled to learn that "there's more than one way to win" -- and helping her to learn this is a paraplegic youngster named Joey (Mark James). A half-hour version of The Heartbreak Winner has been released on VHS as The Gold Test (the title of the original novel).
