Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman starting a new life won't let anyone get in the way of her dreams in this comedy from German director Doris Dorie. After getting dumped by her husband and kicked out of the family home, middle-aged Kathi Koenig (Gabriela Maria Schmeide) picks up the pieces of her life and moves back to Marzahn, the Berlin neighborhood where she was born and raised. Kathi was a hairdresser before she got married, and needing work to support herself and her sullen teenage daughter Julia (Natascha Lawiszus), she's excited to learn a position is open at a up-market hair salon. When she shows up for the interview, the proprietor flatly tells plus-size Kathi that she's not attractive enough to work there despite her experience. Deeply offended, Kathi is determined to open her own salon and succeed on her own terms; however, first she has to raise the money, and soon Kathi is tied up with a number of dubious schemes, ranging from working for a mobile hair care outfit to smuggling illegal aliens into the country. Die Friseuse (aka The Hairdresser) was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
