Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Future director Milton Rosmer stars in the British drama The Greater Need. Set during WW I (and why not? The film was made in 1916!), the story concentrates on aimless youth Bob Leroy (Rosmer). While his brother Jack (Gerald Ames) marches off to war, Bob stays behind, preferring to remain uninvolved. Only when Jack loses an arm on the battlefields of France does Bob's dormant courage and patriotism rise to the surface. Clearly designed to encourage enlistment, The Greater Need was universally praised by critics when first released; imagine what would have happened to any critic that didn't like it.
