Synopsis by Sarah Sloboda
The Gilbert & Sullivan comedic operetta Gondoliers was performed by the Australian Opera Chorus and the Elizabethan Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990, one hundred years after the opera debuted. This video recording features the musical and liberal liberties taken by Melvyn Morrow in his arrangements for the performance. Directed by Brian Macdonald, The Gondoliers boasts some of the amusing quirks that first made it famous: scant and shabby scenery, a male actor in a female role, and the on-stage ingestion of a rodent.
