Thanks to a surfeit of circumstantial evidence, Fred suspects that Wilma is planning to murder him and collect his life insurance. When he is chosen as the target for a circus knife-thrower who happens to be Wilma's former boyfriend, Fred is certain that his suspicions have been confirmed. His only hope now is to fail the insurance medical exam--which happens to fall on the same day he is to be given a physical for his new, high-paying job at Conrad Hailstone's Stone Valley Inn.
