Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This video is the first of a ten-part series on the 1960's, a decade of unprecedented change in America. The decade opened with a choice between the old guard and the new in the 1960 U.S. Presidential election, and John F. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon. Kennedy was a symbol of the times, with his sophisticated interests and concern for human rights. The voices of freedom were heard in Africa, the Russians shot down an American spy plane at the height of the Cold War, and rock 'n' roll star Elvis Presley went off to Germany as a member of the United States Army. These subjects and more are captured with archival film clips in this episode.
