Synopsis by Mark Deming

Raised in a household tainted by violence and drug abuse, Donnie McClurkin found a safe haven from the troubles and temptations that surrounded him in the word of Jesus; at the age of nine, he committed himself to Christ and was helped by a sympathetic aunt who sang in the choir of gospel music great Andre Crouch. With Crouch's guidance, McClurkin became a gospel singer and pastor himself, and despite a life-threatening bout with leukemia, he continues to spread the word of god in story and song. Donnie McClurkin Story: From Darkness...To Light is a documentary in which McClurkin shares his true and inspiring story. Joining him in song are Kirk Franklin, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Marvin Winans, and Patti LaBelle, while McClurkin's friends Beyoncé Knowles, Steve Harvey, Andre Crouch, Bishop T.D. Jakes, and Magic Johnson also share their stories.
