This video is the fourth episode in a five-volume series that traces the history of the American Civil War. The series examines the underlying causes of the four-year War Between the States, follows the troops to significant battles, and assesses both the short- and long-range effects of the war on the American psyche. This program looks at the people still at home in both the North and the South while the war was being fought. The hardships suffered by wives, children, and others left behind are chronicled through letters, diaries, music, and art.
