Charles Ray had been unintentionally destroying his career bit by bit by the time he got around to making this comedy-drama. There were several reasons for this -- he was directing his own features and doing a bad job of it; he made poor story choices; and more often than not he tried to veer away from the country bumpkin character that brought him popularity in the first pl ace. All that is in evidence here, in one of Ray's worst films. After selling his Boston beanery, Amos (Ray) lands in a little Western town where he winds up running another eating establishment. He manages to make it a success, with the emotional support of Sally, a waitress (Marjorie Maurice, who appeared with Ray in The Old Swimmin' Hole under the name Marjorie Prevost). He gratefully tries to find her a husband, not yet realizing that she's really meant for him. Amos makes enough money to take a vacation, but he almost immediately gets rooked by a couple of card sharks who pull the "deuce of spades" trick on him. He comes home to find hundreds of playing cards -- the deuce of spades, of course -- strung into an ironic welcome sign. Then, to make matters worse, the two sharpies show up. Through a trick of his own, Amos makes himself look like a crack shot to win the town's respect, along with chasing the sharpies out of town. After this, he finally wakes up to the fact that Sally is his girl and no one else's.
